When Old Texts Go Bad. The Cow: Dairy Husbandry and Cattle Breeding

The Cow: Dairy Husbandry and Cattle Breeding by M.M. Milburn I mentioned previously that I've been reading a lot of old farming books. This past weekend I came across an example of "old texts gone bad", as I like to say. These are instances where clearly the author's day and age got the better of his beliefs. I always wonder what madness we believe in today that will be ridiculed in the future, but for now I'll just do my best to avoid the madness of years gone by.

Farm Products, What to Charge: Marketing, Price, Calculating Costs, Strategy and Much More

Cross-posted from beginningfarmers.org, an excellent resource for beginning (and existing) farmers. The following is a fantastic guest article that really gives a comprehensive look at what to charge for your farm products. It provides useful information and great insights about marketing, price, calculating production and labor costs, and much more. For even more on this topic, it’s really worth checking out the...

Vermont Cheesemakers Festival

Volunteer Sign In at the Shelburne Farms Coach Barn What a weekend! After a great Saturday traipsing around Hawthorne Valley Farm, Scrapple and I took a trip up to my home state for the Vermont Cheesemakers Festival. Cheese fest? In Vermont? We didn't need any more convincing. We weren’t entirely sure...

Farms Flows - Bees, Cash and Confusion

Courtesy of thedailygreen.com We were watching the movie Colony last weekend (highly recommended) and I was inspired to follow-up on a topic that I think confuses the heck out of most people. Cash vs. Accrual Accounting. Don’t be alarmed by the word “accrual”, you don’t even need to know what...

The "Ick" in Organic: Fox and Factory Farms Fight Back!

Sweetbreads recently sent me this article/video titled "The 'Ick' Factor and the Myth of 'All-Natural'". Give it a quick watch. At a minimum it's good monday morning entertainment.     The article and video really reinforced the great responsibility that we are assuming by committing to produce food. It reminded me...

Are You An Owner of Monsanto?

Courtesy of Greenpeace.   When we saw the movie Food Inc. at a small, nearby theater a couple years ago it really had a profound impact on us. This was around the same time we started “going organic” in our produce choices and Food Inc. helped to push us over...

Give Your Friends an Eggucation!

the proof is in the yolk! Pastured Egg (above) Vs. Factory Egg - photo from thetastingbuds.com Before Scrapple and I really started getting into food we thought we were doing a relatively good job with our supermarket choices. Hormone and antibiotic free meat when it was available at the store,...
