Over the last few years you’ve likely noticed more and more natural products with Activated Charcoal as a touted ingredient. We introduced our first product with Activated Charcoal back in 2012 (it's still a bestseller) and can confidently say that this skincare trend is not going away anytime soon! 

If you've yet to introduce Activated Charcoal into your routine, you're probably wondering what all the fuss is about.

"WHY on earth would anyone want to slather themselves in what looks like black mud?!" Because it's magical. End of story.

If you think I'm joking it's only because you haven't tried it! I'll back up my magical charcoal beliefs with some solid science, but first let's start with the basics.

The word “activated” sometimes throws people off, and no, it’s not like the same charcoal you throw on the grill. Let me break it down for you:

FOR THE GRILL

Charcoal briquettes for the grill are made of bits of charcoal, coal, starch (as a binder), sawdust, and sodium nitrate (to make it burn better). They sometimes come pre-coated with lighter fluid...definitely not something you want to put on your face! 

FOR YOUR BODY

Activated Charcoal used in skincare and body products, on the other hand, is made from pure and natural elements, such as sustainably harvested coconut shells and bamboo. These are transformed into activated charcoal by being heated at high temperatures in an airless drum.

This pressurized heating process creates millions of tiny nooks and crannies or pores in the charcoal that can trap 100-200x its weight in dirt, bacteria, toxins, and chemicals (yesss!).

Here's how:

This may be old news to you, but body odor is not caused specifically by the presence of sweat.  Body odor is actually a result of the bacteria on your skin breaking down the protein in your sweat. (Ewww, right?!) So it’s actually the bacteria you’re smelling, not the sweat!  Remember how I mentioned that the pores in Activated Charcoal can soak up and trap bacteria? Boom! Ditto with any toxins your pores are expelling after having been blocked by aluminum in your old antiperspirant.
