Dog Coat Blowin' In the Wind

Dog Coat Blowin' In the Wind

This past week it started to get hot out here. Consistently above 90, somewhat high humidity, but still kinda dry for Tennessee because we haven’t had much rain. The dogs have been going nuts at night with the coyotes all around. Sheba has noticeably lost some weight, so we’re feeding a bit more than we usually would. Sophie is still her playful self, but you can see it in the dogs, they’re much more on-guard than they've ever been. Instead of sleeping in the shade during the daytime they’ll regularly move back and forth between the pastures, sometimes pausing for...

Wild Turkey Egg Snack

Sophie, the culprit We milk the goats twice per day. Once around 7am and once around 7pm. They like consistency and if you can get the milkings twelve hours apart that tends to work best. Typically, when we go out to get the goats Sophie and Sheba will greet us...

Guinea Gettin' Broody

Guinea hen gettin' broody with it One of our guinea hens is gettin' broody these days. Actually, she’s the only adult guinea hen we have right now. For the past few days she’s been sitting on about 20 eggs tucked away in a strip of trees and vines.

Goat's Milk Soapmaking with Gram

Our Handmade Lavender, Lemon Verbena, and Oat Goat's Milk Soap The first visitor on the farm from my family was Gram. My Gram has always been the "cool Grandma"... Her seemingly uncanny understanding of what was "in" with the kids (she taught High School English) was bolstered in my awkwardly...

Coyote Night - Sleepy Guard Dogs

Coyote Night - Sleepy Guard Dogs

Sophie, the Maremma puppy, looking particularly sleepy Last night was the first rowdy coyote night we've had. It started around dusk with a couple coyotes howling. The dogs went nuts, obviously, running to the perimeter of the farm where the noise came from. With rainfall down dramatically this year water's...

Egg Mobile for the Guineas - a.k.a The Guinea Mobile

Towing the Guinea Mobile out to pasture. It dual purposes as a shelter and shade shack for goats and guard dogs Most of our readers are probably familiar with egg mobiles. Egg mobiles are the glorified apparatuses used by famed alternative farmer Joel Salatin and many other small-scale farmers to...

Meanwhile, Back at the Farm

Janis, showing us how she really feels...When stuff like the piglet escapade happens everything else on the farm stands still. No goats need milking, no pastures rotating, meals cooking, gardens weeding.
