Guinea Keet Hatching Success - First Births on the Farm

New parents huddled over their keets in the rain The influx of baby animals continues. This time with the first actual births on the farm. Our broody guinea hen hatched out her eggs. Of the five remaining eggs, three hatched. If you remember, she started with 23 of her own eggs and 1 turkey egg. About 2.5 weeks into it she lost 15 eggs, including the turkey egg, to a predator. She sat on the remaining nine eggs until today, at which point there were only five left (something must have come last night for the other four). Three hatched and...

Adopt-A-Goat

Our little baby kiko goat Scrapple was wrapping up the typical chores on Tuesday night. Just finished moving the cows to a new paddock. Brought water out to everyone. Gave the pigs some whey that was left over from the day’s cheesemaking. Just as he was stepping into the truck...

Elusive Blue

Blue Not everything goes as planned on the farm. Before moving to Tennessee we put in over a year’s worth of research and planning to make the start-up as “smooth” as possible. Since then lots of stuff has gone according to plan, but just as much has not. Things not...

The Father of our Kids - or - Preparing for the Arrival of our First Buck

When I started looking at the first milking does to bring on to the farm, namely Bridget, I joked with my Mom and some friends and family that I was going to meet "the future Mother of our kids". My mom, having as weird a sense of humor as I...

Postcards from Little Seed - 7.9.12

At sunrise, Guinea Cent and the four new "house keets" raid the new garden space we made with visiting friends this past week. We made a mini permaculture "food forest" with a fig tree, blueberry bushes, and comfrey.

Broody Guinea Update - Nest Raided

Our broody guinea hen is still gettin' broody. She's entering her fourth week, which should be the final week. Luckily, she chose a nice shady spot because she also chose the middle of  heat-wave to sit on those eggs. About a week ago I noticed her off the nest looking down...

Queen of the Truck Roof

At the risk of my Dad taking his truck back, I post for your weekend viewing pleasure Sabine and her undying love for jumping on the truck. She's the only one that does it, and not too frequently, but when she gets going she's impossible to stop. A goat determined...

Rotationally Grazing Through the Drought

Rotationally Grazing Through the Drought

The drought takes its toll. The bottom of a "pond" dries up. Right now our area is anywhere from 30-50% behind average annual rainfall. The ground “crunches” when you walk on it. There’s still plenty of green rose bushes, lespedeza and other plants that can tolerate the drought, but all...
