Interwebs On the Farm (Or Not)

I've heard that getting internet in rural areas is difficult and, to be honest, I kind of pushed it to the back of my mind when thinking about the farm. I really take internet for granted. It’s pretty much expected to be fast and available everywhere, so I just assume that it is. Obviously, it's really freakin' important for personal and business reasons to have good internet access. We practically live on the web. Farm research, Skype with families, online shopping. THE BLOG. I even use the voice over IP (VOIP) phone in gmail for phone calls in the apartment....

Putting Our Water Through the Wringer

Image courtesy of The Virtual Dime Museum: www.thevirtualdimemuseum.com We spent some time detailing the importance of water and, more specifically, rainfall in our determination of where to farm. Access to an adequate and clean water supply was also critical. What we haven’t talked about is just what it takes for...

Working WITH the Land

"Hell yeah I eat small trees, what about it?" There’s a few things we’ve chosen to emphasize with our farming model, one of which is to work WITH the land, not against it. Among the multitude of problems we see with so-called “conventional” or “industrial” ag is the unsustainable approach...

Rabbits on Pasture or in a Hoop House?

Rabbit photos courtesy of Stone & Thistle Farm and Allsun Farm While we were down in Tennessee last weekend we popped by a few local food retailers to say hi and chat about Little Seed's plans and the potential for future business relationships. We were consistently asked if we could...

Farmstead Cheese Equipment: What's a Small Farmer To Do?

Maria at Masseria la Greca outside Lecce in Salento, Italy Since the end of last summer we’ve been acquiring the bits and pieces to put together the creamery. The primary components we’re interested in are the milking system (pipeline or bucket, we don’t know yet), the bulk tank and the...

Farm To-Do!

Talk to state Vet about bringing animals in from out of state - DONE!A little over 6 months ago, Scrapple suggested we consolidate all of our lists and notes and make one definitive Farm To-Do List. We share it on Google Docs so it's always easy to access and edit...

2011 - Remembering an Epic Year

If there's one thing I'll definitely remember about 2011 it's the over-use of the word "epic". It drives me crazy.   Ok, that's not completely true, 2011 was full of many wonderful memories and significant events. So much so that I want to recap some of it.   Winter

Seeing Signs

our lucky tractor  I'm a little superstitious...just enough. Enough to have felt chills when the vintage jag I had dreamed of driving since I was 10 (I would look so badass!) sat abandoned in the driveway of the farm on our first visit.
